Section 14. METAL WASTES BIOLOGICAL REMOVAL AND CHEMICAL RECOVERY OF METALS FROM SLUDGES

چکیده

Utilization of sewage sludge on land is an appealing sludge disposal method. The reasons are not just because of the environmental and economic constraints associated with other disposal methods such as incineration and landfilling, but also because the sludge is beneficial both as a soil conditioner and as a fertilizer [1,2]. However, the major limitation with land application of sewage sludge has been the high heavy metals concentration in the sludge. Concern stems from the potential health hazard associated with metal uptake by plants and its subsequent accumulation in the food chain. Reduction of the heavy metal content of sewage sludge could significantly increase the amount of sludge suitable for land application.

Biosorption: critical review of scientific rationale, environmental importance and significance for pollution treatment

Biosorption may be simply defined as the removal of substances from solution by biological material. Such substances can be organic and inorganic, and in gaseous, soluble or insoluble forms. Biosorption is a physico-chemical process and includes such mechanisms as absorption, adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation and precipitation. Biosorption is a property of both living and dead orga...

Content and Fractionation of Heavy Metals in Water Treatment Sludges

The composition a d distribution of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in eight alum and FeCI 3 coagulation sludges were investigated using a five-step chemical fractionation procedure to assess potential impacts following soil incorporation. The mean total metal levels (mg kg-~ dry wt.) for these sludges were Cd (<2), Cu (234), Cr (187), Ni (102), Pb (230), and Zn (557), which are well below maximum a...

Heavy metals biosorption by mushrooms

The use of absorbents of biological origin has emerged in the last decade as one of the most promising alternatives for the control of environmental pollution caused by heavy metals. A number of methods, viz. chemical precipitation, evaporation, electroplating, ion exchange, membrane, processes, etc. exist for the removal of heavy metals from liquid wastes. All these methods are expensive and h...

The Role of Microorganisms in Biosorption of Toxic Metals and Radionuclides

A multiplicity of physico-chemical and biological mechanisms determine the removal of toxic metals, metalloids and radionuclides from contaminated wastes. Physico-chemical mechanisms of removal, which may be encompassed by the general term ‘biosorption”, include adsorption, ion exchange and entrapment which are features of living and dead biomass as well as derived products. In living cells, bi...
